How to play

Be the first to empty your hand by matching IPA symbols in your cards to the active card.

• On your turn, select a card in your hand, then select the face-up active card to play it.
• A play is only valid if your card shares its place or manner of articulation (or both) with the active card.
• Instead of playing, you can click the face-down draw pile to draw a card. Drawing always ends your turn. If you cannot make a valid play, you must draw a card.
• Green wild cards can be played on any active card. When you play a wild, you must pick one of its two symbols, which becomes the new active symbol.
• By default, computer opponents play smartly (indicated by 🧠🧠🧠), but this can be adjusted down to make them easier to beat.
• The first player to play their last card wins!
• Use the Show descriptions button any time to show all cards' places and manners. You can re-hide these descriptions by clicking Hide descriptions.

Symbol notes

• [r] is the alveolar trill, not a cover symbol for the various pronunciations of the English rhotic
• lateral airflow is ignored, so lateral fricatives count as fricatives, the lateral flap counts as a flap, etc.
• the places of the clicks are bilabial [ʘ], dental [ǀ], alveolar [! ǁ], and palatal [ǂ]
• the ejective fricatives [f’] and [s’] do not match with pulmonic fricatives, only with ejectives
• [ʍ] counts as a velar approximant and [ɥ] counts as a palatal approximant; their rounding is ignored
